Why this petition matters

Started by Emmie Platts

I’m about to tell you the story of how my wonderful grandad tuck his last breath at Barnsley Hospital and 13.45pm on the 01/06/2020. Roy Platts a loving and caring soul was admitted to Barnsley Hospital on the 22/05/2020 with a low kidney count and unbalanced diabetes. He has suffered with hypos for a few weeks prior to the admission. Grandad was in ward 18 (non covid patient ward) next to ward 17 (covid patient ward). Nurses and doctors would flee from ward to ward with little PPE, not even a mask to check on patients. My Nan had asked for many days for dirty washing to be handed back, instead they had filled his locker up with days worth of used underwear. Asking for answers of why my grandads diabetics hadn’t improved was impossible. For the amount of time my grandad was under the care of the NHS the nurses and doctors had left us in the dark. My grandad had many tests whilst been in the hospital for covid but all of them came back negative apart from the test taken on Saturday at 1600, my grandads symptoms were mild he was still eating and having a joke with the nurses. My grandad never left his bed, suffering with what I can only describe as a nightmare. My grandad went in to hospital to get better not to die. We spoke to him on Sunday around lunchtime and he seemed okay within himself and as we said our goodbyes, we heard him cough that was the only time we heard the start of the covid downhill spiral. Monday morning came and we didn’t hear anything, 1200 we had a phone call from the doctors saying my grandad had deteriorated rapidly from the night before phone call. My Dad and Nan were told to come to the hospital to say there last goodbyes. My Nan spent 10 mins with my grandad after not seeing him for over 10 days, holding on to 50 years of marriage and 2 beautiful children and 3 gorgeous grandchildren. She sat and held my grandads hand until the angels collected him. My dad never got to say goodbye as my grandad has already past before he got there. I need you all to know that Barnsley Hospital has let us down, let my grandad down and failed to protect and care for a patient who should not only been in the hospital a few days but who had many more years of memories to makes with his family. Grandad I will get you justice and I will make a change
