I believe that employers should offer mental health days as part of their employer benefit packages. Most employers offer the basic paid time off, vacation, holiday, etc. But these have to be pre-approved and if you call out without an approval, you get occurrences against you. I myself struggle with depression and anxiety, and my mind works differently than those without. When I’m in a downward phase, getting out of bed is a task in itself. On top of personal life stressors, work is a stress in itself at this point. I push myself without giving myself a break because I do not want to get behind or get a write up for missing a day. Eventually all of the stress weighs down on me and I break. Sometimes it’s self-harming thoughts, sometimes I end up stressing myself to a point where I’m sick. I’ve had a coworker that committed suicide because of all the stress in his personal life combined with all of the stress from the job. I think that employers should offer at minimum, quarterly mental health days so that the employee can take a day to mentally reset without negative percussion from their employer, working almost in the same way FMLA would. To ensure that this time does not get abused, allowed amount per pay period or quarter should be set. If employees do not have time on the books, I believe there should still be partial pay due to this is a main factor in people choosing not to take a day to gain composure. They worry their check will be short so they keep pushing because money is a leading factor in stress. Mental illness needs to be taken more seriously and I think this would be a great start to teaching that goal.
