It causes concern to see young plus two passed students , even with more than 85% aggregate marks , running from pillar to post to get admission in the subject of their choice in arts and science colleges in most of the states. Students from middle and upper income group unquestioningly and helplessly pay the exhorbitant fees demanded by self financing arts and science colleges to get admission. However, students from poor families are left high and dry leading to high level of frustration and even anger.
At the same time, there are numerous engineering colleges and polytechnics all over India ,where adequate number of students do not join to the level of intake capacity, as their job prospects have become bleak, in view of so many colleges with number of engineers passing out of colleges every year being more than country’s need.
For example, there are more than 530 engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu alone and there are polytechnics which are much more in number. In the engineering colleges, every year more than one lakh seats remain unfilled in Tamil Nadu and amongst the passed out students , hardly 40% get appropriate jobs. The other students remain under employed or unemployed for considerable period.
In recent times, students look forward to study arts and science subjects as job prospects for such students are diversified in variety of fields unlike engineering students.
Why not atleast 20% of engineering colleges and polytechnics all over India be converted to arts and science colleges this academic year itself?
This would make seats available for aspiring plus two students in arts and science subjects, bring down the high fees demanded by the self financing colleges and also several engineering colleges which have very low level of students joining and are on the verge of closure will become more productive.
It is unfortunate that All India council For Technical Education do not care to evaluate the need for the number of engineers while according permission for engineering colleges. It appears that AICTE take decision to accord permission to new engineering colleges and enhancement of seats in engineering colleges based on the infra structure and faculty members available.
I appeal to government of India to look into the matter with great sense of urgency and accept the above suggestion that will considerably help in rationalizing the seats available in various branches of study at the degree level courses in India.
