OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM MUST EMPHASIZE ON LEARNING RATHER THAN ON MARKS AND GRADES

  • In 1929, the Board of High School and Intermediate Education, Rajputana, was established. It is more than a century old system which needs a complete makeover as soon as possible.
  • Rote learning is prominent-emphasis on memorising the facts rather than thoroughly understanding the concepts.
  • Everything is about rote memorization, leading to behaviour which encourages cramming and forgetting rather than lifelong learning.
  • Lack of diversity in the subjects you can take in college (e.g. can't take double major in Maths and German like you can in the USA)
  • Students have no freedom to think creatively and to question the content on textbooks.
  • Giving more importance to textbooks than teachers. There's no autonomy to teachers.
  • Taking marks as the assessment of student's talent, when marks can be easily obtained by memorising the pre-written answers from the textbook.
  • The Indian government spending only 3% of it's GDP on education.
  • As the government is unable to invest enough in the education sectors, private institutions roped in, and the result is the high cost of education.
  • Not encouraging research and innovation.
  • No proper career guidance available for students.
  • Extreme pressure from parents/society to use education for financial security( e.g. CSE degrees for programming jobs or medicine. Societal pressure to get into the "right schools", not only for the education aspects but to ensure good jobs/marriage prospects, in general success in life.
  • Additional extreme pressure due to limited seats resulting in very intense competition among students.  1. Reservation systems 2. Management quota systems
  • "Enough studies now go to play!" ,"Take some time out daily to dance or take acting classes , that's what you like!" These kids never hear these sentences. All they hear is "Now go study". Making report cards is the primary focus in life.
