NURUL NABILAH BINTI MAT MUNI (B211101035) started this petition to Human and

Estimated 1.15 to 2.41 million tonnes of plastic are entering the ocean each year from rivers.  About 75% earth surface’s covered by ocean and also represent about 99% living space volume that contains 200,000 identified species. Our rainwater, drinking water, weather, climate, much of our food and even the oxygen in the air that we breath are all ultimately provided by the sea.

Today, water pollution is one of the main environmental issue that we are facing. A huge culprit is single-use plastics, used once before tossed into the trash or directly into the ocean. These single-use items are accidentally consumed by many marine mammals. Plastic waste is particularly problematic as a pollutant because it is so long-lasting. Plastic items can take hundreds of years to decompose.  Much of this plastic is in the fish themselves. Turtles and other marine animals especially seabirds, mistake plastic for food. It is not digestible of course, but it gives the animal the sensation of being full so the animal then starves to death.

Today, we produce over 300 million tons of plastic every year. That's equivalent to the weight of nearly the entire human population. And with an expected 20% increase in plastic production predicted over the next decade, the problem is only getting worse. Soon, if not already, the weight of all the plastic in the world’s oceans will weigh more than all of the oceans’ fish.

In 2019 a juvenile beaked whale that washed ashore in the Philippines was found to have died from having eaten 100 pounds of plastic bags. At least one million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals die every year from encountering plastic.

We need to take urgent action to stop this toxic waste stream from continuing to build up. Unlike natural materials that biodegrade, nearly every piece of plastic ever produced still exists. As these items fragment into smaller particles, known as microplastics, they concentrate toxins and become impossible to remove from the natural environment. Cleanups can be costly and this tactic alone can’t keep up with the production of plastics. Existing recycling infrastructure can’t keep pace either.

In 2002, Bangladesh is the first country in the world to implement a ban on thin plastic bags, after it was found they played a key role in clogging drainage systems during disastrous flooding. Other countries begin to follow suit. Many countries has change the use of plastic bag into fabric bag or paper bag. However, there are still more plastic being used by the human. So, this is our time to bring this issue and let's do this to together to reduce the use of plastics for the sake of marine life. Thus, let us sign this petition and spread to others so that everyone is aware about the marine pollution.
