Bahamas Islands are a natural paradise, with few monuments. The island of San Salvador is mentioned in all the books of history worldwide, because on October 12th 1492 Christopher Columbus, landing there, "discovered" the New World. San Salvador has about a thousand inhabitants living on the edge of world's events, they have no historical awareness and do not defend nor take care of one of the few monuments of the Bahamas, like the island prison. The island Prison was built with coral blocks in 1836, it hosted the office of the English governor, and it has two cells that were used invert few occasions. During 1992’s celebrations of the V Centenary of the Discovery of the New World, the city of Genoa took care of the building’s renovation turning it into a museum. In 2014 a hurricane uncovered the roof, the contents of the Museum were moved elsewhere and the government took three years to decide to renovate and reopen the museum. But then the elections came and the government received a very heavy blow, losing almost all the seats in Parliament. The former minister of public works was one of the very few to be re-elected in San Salvador's borough and he is now the the opposition’s leader. That was enough for the new government to stop every investment in the island and indifferently attend the progressive deterioration of the two centuries old solid building.
I believe that the time has come when art must be separated from the politics’ partisan use of it. And I hope that in each of us snoozes a little Christopher Columbus who wants to discover his new world, and who considers art and culture as important elements. I therefore invite you to sign the following appeal to the Prime Minister of the Bahamas in order to save the historical building from his distruction. You will make an art salvation job and above all you will give a message that today is more and more important: the artistic and cultural heritage can not be subjected to political partisans! And that goes beyond the Bahamas.
