This petition asks Monmouth Town Council to reverse its decision to deny the town a better site for its flagship playground on the village green. Monmouth's central playground (Chippy) has secured funding for an upgrade from the County Council.

When the money was first announced in 2014, the County Council's plan was to move the playground and create a 'New Destination' play area on the other side of Chippenham Mead, but the Town Council would only agree to money being spent on refurbishing the playground in the place where it has always stood: cheek-by-jowl with the A40 dual carriageway. The A40 is far busier now than fifty years ago when the playground was first set up. The air quality at the traffic lights a few hundred feet away is so bad these days that the County Council itself has been monitoring it closely (see Coupled with the noise and speed of passing vehicles, this is not a decent backdrop for a playground.

There are other issues: the lack of nearby facilities such as loos; the fact that it is in a hidden spot making it unpopular with parents as well as a magnet for anti-social behaviour; the way that a cycle route goes straight through it ensuring inconvenience for both cyclists and playground users.

Monmouth deserves a better central playground but it isn't going to get one with the current plans (open for public consultation until 31st March). We are seeking to reverse the decision the Town Council took in 2014 because this is the first step towards opening up the consultation and working together for a new playground on Chippy in which everybody truly has a stake. We want a playground to be proud of, one which is truly inclusive and accessible to all. We want a playground in the right place, loved and appreciated by the whole community. Now is the time to push for that vision to be made a reality.

How will we do this? The Community Affairs Committee which can review the Town Council's 2014 decision meets on 21st March. The public have the right to be heard at this meeting and we intend to be there, putting our views across. We are already working together as a group to put forward a better alternative on Chippy to the current plans, and we want everybody to be included in this discussion. We will work hard on ensuring that the funding for this important project is not only kept but increased by match-funding, fundraising etc. Please sign our petition to show your support for our aims and to help convince the Town Council that the public demand better. Any comments received will be collated and presented to the Community Affairs Committee along with our petition signatures. Many thanks for reading.
