Climate change is most certainly real and happening everywhere. NASA states that in the last 650,000 years there have been 7 cycles of glacial advance and retreat. The end of the last Ice Age roughly 7000 years ago marked the start of our modern climate era. The Industrial Revolution had a surprising part to play in today's Climate Change because it brought massive energy consumption and fossil fuels such as coal and oil. Steam engines were invented which meant you could transport people and goods a lot quicker instead of using a horse and buggy.  Those steam engines required a lot of coal to fuel them. The only problem with that is coal is a fossil fuel and emits carbon dioxide (CO2). Humans also have a big role to play as well.

Humans burn a lot of carbon-based materials which emits carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. A chemical analysis was done and it showed that the increase of atmospheric CO2 that the increase is coming from burning fossil fuels. I found three surprising facts that will blow your mind. Ninety-seven percent of scientists say that humans are the cause of global warming. Forty percent more CO2 is in the atmosphere since the Industrial Revolution. We even add 70 METRIC TONS of CO2 into the atmosphere daily. IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) says that there is a more than 95% probability that human activities over the past 50 years have warmed our planet.  Now that we know the cause, what is the effect?

Global Temp Rise

The average global temperature has risen 1.62 degrees (F) since the late 19th century. This change was largely pushed by increased carbon dioxide and other man-made emissions into the atmosphere. The earth has started to warm up over the past 35 years with the warmest year on record being 2016.

Warming Oceans

The oceans have absorbed most of the heat, with the top 700 (2,300 ft) of ocean showing warming of more than 0.4˙F since 1969.

Shrinking Ice Sheets

Glaciers are retreating almost everywhere around the world. Greenland and the Antarctic ice sheets have also decreased in mass. The extent and thickness of Arctic sea ice have declined a lot over the last several decades.

Sea Level Rise

The global sea level rose roughly 8 inches in the last century. Nearly double of last century.

What are the future effects?

  • Global temps will continue to rise.
  • There will be changes in precipitation patterns.
  • There will be more droughts and heat waves.
  • Hurricanes will become stronger and more intense.
  • The sea level will rise 1-4 feet by 2100.
  • And the Arctic is likely to be ice-free.

What is the solution?

Regular citizens can only do so much to prevent the future effects of climate change like carpooling/riding the bus, stop littering, use more solar power energy, etc. It is the bigger organizations and politicians that do something to change it.  That is why I am creating this petition.
