HRM to prioritize green space development at Transom Drive Park
Why this petition matters
In advance of the HRM Parks Planning meeting in October, I have submitted a request through Tim Outhit - Councillor, Bedford - Wentworth to have the currently undeveloped recreational land located behind the Transom Drive Park developed into a useful park.
History:
The land has sat undeveloped for at least 10 years, however, it was originally intended to be developed in a “greenspace” for the neighbourhood. I understand this land was returned to the city by the developer in its current state – this should never have been accepted as “greenspace”. HRM has not addressed the area by developing the space into a useful park and it remains rock filled and unmaintained.
Issue:
This area is under continued development and is currently very heavily populated by families – many with young children. There isn’t a single open field / park in the Starboard Drive area for children to run around, play catch and/or soccer, etc. The number of children, coupled with the speed cars travel in the area suggests developing the subj area into an open (and maintained) field would provide a safe space for neighbourhood children (and adults) to play.
Options proposed:
Bronze option – Flatten the area and plant grass seed (or sod) so neighbourhood children have a space to play.
Silver option - Flatten the area and convert to a soccer and/or baseball field so neighbourhood children have a space to play.
Platinum option - Flatten the area and convert to a soccer and/or baseball field, and add a ball hockey / basketball court so neighbourhood children have a space to play.
