Ban Single-Use Plastic Bags in Howell Township

Ban Single-Use Plastic Bags in Howell Township
Why this petition matters

We are a group of 8th graders who are working towards the ban of single-use carryout bags in Howell Township. The use of disposable bags contributes to a variety of environmental problems that we can assist in solving with this ban.
Recent studies in water contamination have found microplastics in 83% of tap water samples from prominent cities across the world. Why is this a problem? Well, plastic substances in the bloodstream are linked to higher rates of certain health issues. Yes, this problem can directly affect you. By eliminating the use of single-use carryout bags in local restaurants and establishments, we are taking a small yet significant step towards the solution.
Not only do plastic bags lead to the contamination of our drinking water, they can also kill the marine animals in our oceans. If plastic bags are not disposed of properly, they can end up in the ocean, which is then consumed by marine animals. The plastic will fill the animals' stomachs, and the animals will die of starvation, since the animals think they’re full because their stomachs are full. Failing to recycle murders at least 1,000,000 sea creatures a year. Yes, that’s a lot of zeros. While it seems futile, the average shopper uses about 13,000 plastic bags in their lifetime. The elimination of plastic bags in our town will make a huge difference.
Contrary to popular belief, the use of reusable plastic is not inconvenient. For instance, reusable bags carry more weight and hold their shape much better than plastic. They’re also much softer and easier to hold. Most importantly, reusable bags are extremely cost effective. You can use the same shopping bag for years without having to buy new ones. Evidently, the green lifestyle has its benefits. You can even choose your favorite color, making your shopping experience more enjoyable!
As you can see, we need to take action. Howell Township needs to ban plastic bags in order to participate in the fight against plastic pollution. Please sign in order to save our township’s environment.
