Make Election Day a Holiday: Howard University
Why this petition matters

2020's election will undoubtedly be an election that shapes the direction of our country not only for the next four years but for the next several decades. November 3rd, 2020 is on a weekday because of that there is no guarantee that our student body will have the adequate time to get to the polls and vote with class and other responsibilities students face during the average day. In order to ensure that the Bison family gets the highest amount of voter participation possible we must make November 3rd, 2020 a student holiday
Making Election Day a school holiday is essential due to the rampant amounts of voter suppression we have seen in several states across the United States. As a result of us not being on campus due to COVID-19, many of us will have to deal with long waiting times at the polls and combining that the pressure of having class at certain times as well assignments could cause students to give up voting.
It is well documented that COVID-19 affects the older population much more than it does younger people. Many of the people who have worked the polls prior to the pandemic were old members of community and it is our responsibility to fill that gap and having a school holiday for the election will allow us to do that. For some of us this will be our first election and we do not need anything to get in our way to have our voice heard in our community!
