Keep Howard County Schools Open

Keep Howard County Schools Open
With a rise of COVID-19 cases, there's been many people wanting to switch back to virtual school. However, virtual school was draining to both students' mental and physical health for the previous 2020-21 school year. I believe that we should keep schools open for several reasons that regard students' mental health and education. Although virtual school is safer for our physical health, mental health should be put into consideration, since mental health is just as important as physical health. Many students have said that it was harder to learn virtually and feel as if they didn't take in much information from virtual courses. Students that had struggled with virtual learning do better learning in person, and switching back will make them struggle as they did before. Many students are passionate about sports and would like if they would be able to keep playing, which would not be possible with virtual learning. In person school also serves as a safe space for students and teachers who live in abusive, toxic households, and is also a safe space for LGBTQ+ students and teachers who live in homophobic households. Households can be the most mentally draining places for students who live under certain circumstances, and virtual school would keep them at home, which is the last place some students would want to be. There's several other reasons why virtual school could be bad, depending on an individuals' situation. Keeping schools open would be favorable for many people.
