Add SMA to the NYS Newborn Blood Screening and Save Lives

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is the leading cause of genetic death in infants under the age of 2. It robs the ability to move, swallow, and eventually breathe. Sadly, babies are not screened for this disorder during their newborn blood screen. 1 in 10,000 babies are born with SMA and even more shocking – 1 in 40 people unknowingly carry the gene. The FDA approved the first treatment for this disease in December of 2016, Spinraza. When started early in life, Spinraza can yield better outcomes for children diagnosed with SMA – including a better quality of life, reaching milestones that they wouldn’t be able to do so otherwise, and PROLONGING their lives. Please, sign this petition. We need to help families who could potentially be impacted by this devastating disease and make the SMA screening mandatory!
