Urban Genesis is proposing a 66-unit apartment complex at 6th ½ and Oxford. This high-density development has requested a parking variance to reduce their off-street parking requirement from 87 parking spaces to 74 vehicle spaced + 32 bicycle spaces.

This variance request was presented in the Houston Planning Commission meeting on Thursday, March 28th. Prior to the meeting, over 60 letters of protest were sent to the Planning commission and over 30 people showed up to speak.

This is a highly contentious issue and consideration of the variance request was deferred until the Thursday, April 11th meeting so that the developer and neighbors could take more time to meet and come up with a solution. Over 70 Heights neighbors met with Urban Genesis on April 1st, hosted by Bill Baldwin. In exchange for supporting the variance, Urban Genesis offered the neighborhood four (4) speed cushions to be shared between 6 1/2 and Oxford OR a section of sidewalk (200 linear feet but length subject to price).

There is currently a parking issue in our area and Urban Genesis seeks to add to it. Neither offer made by Urban Genesis alleviates the impact of the requested variance. Approving variance requests allows developers to shift costs onto the city and the neighbors. Therefore, we ask the city deny the variance request by Urban Genesis.
