Rice Box is proposing a full service restaurant at Greenbriar and University. This restaurant chain has requested a parking variance to reduce their off-street parking requirement from 12 parking spaces to 10 parking spaces + bicycle spaces.

This variance request will be presented at the Houston Planning Commission meeting on Thursday, January 9. Prior to the meeting, many letters of protest were sent to the Planning commission.

This is a highly contentious issue. Rice Box is a popular restaurant chain that has a high volume of patrons and food delivery services, as well as employees that require parking.  The owner may have employees pay for parking in the Rice Stadium lot, but this may be a problem due to the new inflatable practice field that will reportedly be in the same lot, competing parking from Rice University students and faculty, and potential future increases in parking fees.

There is currently a parking and traffic issue in our area and Rice Box seeks to add to it. Their current plans do not alleviate the impact of the requested variance. Approving variance requests allows businesses to shift costs onto the city and the neighbors. Therefore, we ask the city deny the variance request by Rice Box.
