Every SENIOR Walks!!
Every SENIOR Walks!!
We are the parent's of HISD Seniors. We have looked forward to this moment in our children's lives since the day they were born. The pride and excitement of this time in their lives is unexplainable. Many have had to overcome many obstacles to get here. Some never believing they would live to see it. In this current pandemic it's the only light that some have.
You asked for our opinion on this matter recently. Student's and parents alike were more than happy to wait for a graduation at a later date. The idea of a virtual graduation was not only upsetting but disappointing. Yet we understood there had to be options and every one of them had to be considered. We voted. We shared so others could vote, yet we were not heard. In a time where we try to encourage our young adults to vote and speak up for themselves they were not heard.
Today we learned via email that Interim Superintendent Latham decided to go against the wishes of students and parents. News was simply snuck out. No call out, no media frenzy just quietly sent out that our children and us as well would be robbed of the one thing so many have waited for in all of this turmoil.
As parents we can all agree that our children's safety and well being comes first. Yet with the reopening of Texas we know that there are safe options to recognize our children and allow them to reach their goal of walking across that stage. As of now retail stores, museums, wedding venues and other businesses have been given the okay under Governor Abbott's order to open at 25% with social distancing guidelines in place. These are all in closed spaces. As we heal from this pandemic more openings will occur. Other school district's have decided to still host graduations but at a later time. Houston Community College is allowing their students to be recognized in the fall commencements. If there are other options that still provide graduates to walk across the stage for other districts then why can't HISD do the same thing?
What HISD has offered is an unacceptable and inexcusable "graduation" option for these hard working seniors. We the signers of this petition demand that every Senior walks that stage!! Virtual graduation is not an option!! Our graduates have earned the right to walk that stage rain or shine and even pandemic!!
Class of 2020 you have faced adversity and devastation. Yet through it all have risen not only to the occasion, but conquered it. We salute you and stand with you!!
