Gareth Thomas started this petition to Houses of Parliament

I am a cyclist and a National Standard Cycle Instructor. National Standard cycle training is devised and promoted by the Ministry of Transport. It’s objectives are to promote safer cycling through training of bike control skills, road positioning, observation and traffic priorities.

At the heart of this training is two recommended road positions, Primary and Secondary. Primary position is the middle of the cyclist’s lane and It is advised whenever the cyclist needs to take control of their lane and when it’s not safe for them  to be overtaken. Secondary is a metre away from the kerb and is advised for use on wider roads where overtaking might be safe.

Currently, you are only likely to know about these road positions if you have undertaken the National Standard cycle training. These road positions are not in the Highway Code and are therefore not widely understood by the vast majority of drivers.

I strongly believe that incorporating the recommended road positions into the Highway Code,  or even making National Standard Cycle Training compulsory for learner drivers would foster a greater understanding between all road users.

Please support this petition in order to try and make the roads a safer place for cyclists and to raise the understanding of drivers.
