Improved internet services for the Maylands, Inglewood, Bayswater and Bedford area.

This petition of the citizens and friends of the community of Perth, Western Australia, draws the attention of the House to the lack of adequate investment in telecommunications infrastructure in the Federal Perth electorate, particularly in the inner city suburbs of Maylands, Inglewood, Bedford and Bayswater. The current outdated copper telecommunications infrastructure in these suburbs is old and in poor condition, delivering grossly inadequate internet connection speeds. Rumoured plans by NBNCo to roll out ‘Fibre-to-the-node’ National Broadband Network in these suburbs in 2019, if true, will provide below par connection speeds, too late to correct the growing East-West digital divide between Perth residents and citizens of Eastern States.
Your petitioners therefore request that the House should urge the Minister for Finance and the Minister for Communications, acting as the shareholders of NBNCo, to direct the company to immediately draw up plans to build an adequate Fibre-to-the-premises network throughout these communities that fulfils today’s performance standards for broadband speed and reliability. The planning and construction for this is to commence urgently, however to mitigate the inevitable delay for implementation which these areas have already suffered, the House urges the Minister for Finance and the Minister for Communications to oblige Telstra to install a local hub to service the said areas without delay.
