Covid-19, among its other side effects, will put vulnerable children at risk of going hungry as schools close down. Children are already being taken out of schools in order to avoid Covid-19 spread, but will be staying home, hungry, because their meals come from schools. Under government and private subsidies, currently, breakfast and lunch (for some, their only hot meal) are being provided in state schools. However, with children not attending, they will be more vulnerable than before, and may have more compromised immune systems that will not protect them as well against Covid-19.

Has the PM considered this? Probably not! How will the Government support these children, living on the poverty line, and often at risk of domestic violence? In combination with this, some will be in unstable living situations and will have experienced childhood trauma.

People close to me are teachers in some of the most deprived public, primary schools in our city, and have relayed to me, many first-hand experiences over how children come into the classroom, unfocused, hungry and distraught. Teaching is already a difficult profession in this current social and political climate, and the government is failing these children. How will it ensure that school closures don't negatively impact on them, further? Please stand with me to demand answers!
