Council tax debts and arrears are becoming a point of stress for people who have had extreme changes in circumstances. I am currently in a similar situation where my partner has undergone treatment for cancer and is unable to return to work at the moment. Due to this we have fallen behind with some bills and the one that is causing the most stress and health concern is the council tax arrears. The arrears have been passed to a debt collection agency and we initially agreed a repayment plan with them. This began to get out of control when the next years worth of council tax was added on. The collection agency demanded more money than we could afford which has now led to the demanding the entire sum in one go or the will take property from the rented house we live. I have asked the council numerous times to take the debt back and take an amount from us that will leave us with enough money to buy food and for me to get to work. They have refused and I have now tried to contact my MP to see what they can help with. This affects people with long term cancer treatments, people with young children and people or are extremely vulnerable. I would like parliament to look in the practise of sending council tax arrears straight to collection agency’s after three missed payments without trying other ways like applying to take it from wages rather than adding even more debts and worries to people who are vulnerable and in great financial difficulty.
