Mothers-to-be as well as new mothers across America are at more risk of injury or death, during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period than in any other developed country in the world.

The maternal mortality rate in the United States is currently 26 deaths out of every 100,000 live births, resulting in about 700 maternal mortalities per year. Compared to the millions of people in U.S., this does not seem like very many. However, 60% of these deaths are preventable if hospitals had better funding and better protocol to deal with any complications of a pregnancy.

Most pregnancy complications happen after a woman is released from the hospital 1-2 days after giving birth and before their first checkup at the 42 day mark. Some of these include postpartum depression, hemorrhage, blood clots, stroke, etc. Some of the better protocol that would dramatically alter the rate of maternal mortality would be weighing the blood loss during childbirth. This would help regulate and decrease bleeding out. Regularly monitoring blood pressure would also help with bleeding out, stroke, or be a telling sign of many other complications such as infection or sepsis.

One other change in protocol would be to increase the amount of checkups post delivery. While a newborn baby has a checkup weekly, a new mother only gets one required checkup six weeks after childbirth. In order to keep mothers healthy and treated properly for any and all complications they could have or could have developed, more checkups should be recommended or required. One checkup one week after delivery should be required, and a checkup at three weeks should be recommended, as well as the currently required six week checkup.

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid services helps control what protocols have to be taken. This includes the protocols taken when a mother is giving birth. If you sign this petition you are helping play a role in solving maternal mortality. By targeting The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services we are helping change the protocols that are taken and add ones that aren't.
