Tahiti Beach Swing

In August 2021, Hope Town Council approved the construction a swing in the waters in the Sea Of Abaco off of Tahiti Beach.  This approval was reaffirmed in February 2022 with construction of 1 swing to proceed.  It will be constructed using natural materials so it will blend in well with Tahiti Beaches natural beauty.  In other parts of The Bahamas, ocean swings have become tourist attractions, enhancing the beauty and photogenic nature of Bahamian beaches, people love and enjoy them.  Tahiti Beach is a Bahamian asset, which brings thousands of visitors to our island each year and is a treasure for local recreation, bathing and relaxation.  Below the high-water mark, the land and the sea belong to Bahamians, for the benefit of Bahamians.  Recreation at Tahiti Beach not only gives Bahamians a place to relax, swim and unwind, but it also supports local businesses, such as Thirsty Cuda, boat captains, rental boats companies and other local businesses where visitors stop off afterwards for lunch or just to relax after a day in the boat.  A  swing at Tahiti would be a fabulous addition, for our visitors, for our locals and for our local businesses and economy.

What is the Real Issue?

The law provides for local decision making about local issues, such as planning and development of our island.  For tourism, businesses and the well-being and needs and wishes of local people.  It is important that our right as local people to make local decisions about our island is preserved and respected.  Despite Hope Town District Council's careful consideration and decision-making process about the swings, some second-home owners who've bought land in Dorres Cove have signalled their intent to appeal and have our local council's decision over-turned.  They believe they have the right to control what happens on Bahamian beaches and seas. If they successfully overturn our Council's decision, it sets a very worrying precedent - removing decisions about local planning and recreation in our seas away for locals.   Please sign this petition to support our Council's decision and to uphold the principles of local decisions for local matters - pleas don't let other people take control over our island!

Let locals decide Local Matters!
