HCS Students started this petition to Hoover City Schools Board of Education

As students at Hoover City Schools have returned during the pandemic, precautions and guidelines such as staggered scheduling has been put in place in order to minimize student-teacher contact. As only 1/3 of students return to school on their respective days, there is more space for social distancing in hallways and classrooms. For larger organizations such as choir, band, and certain athletics, the staggered scheduling has proved essential to their progress and success.

To further prove our point, we would like to shed light on recent student behavior at football games. Although masks are said to be required, there have been many pictures around social media showing students without their masks in an already crowded area. This, coupled with off-campus activities, is putting students at risk in ways we cannot mitigate. We fear for both the health of our students and community since there exist many people at high risk for the virus.

Returning to school with 2000 other students will make social-distancing more difficult. In addition, the current style of learning will become an incredible burden on students if it continues with the five-day adaptation. Students are given a high volume of assignments at the beginning of each week, all of which are to be conducted virtually. Class time is reserved for questions, but most of the time, students finish their in-person instruction within a few minutes and are told to work on virtual assignments.

Many students attend school from 7 AM to 3 PM on their respective days and have time to complete a small fraction of their work, forcing them to do another 8 hour work day each night in order to complete the virtual assignments on top of extra-curriculars. This is unhealthy, and provides virtually no extra time to rest, apply for college, or study for standardized testing. If the current style of learning continues with a five day school week, we fear for our students’ physical and mental health.
