Juveniles with no regard for human life intentionally set fire to the Columbia River Gorge at Punchbowl Falls, and other locations along the Eagle Creek trail. The fire was set by throwing fireworks off a cliff in a tinder-dry forest on an unusually hot day. Multiple witnesses saw these teenagers and told them to stop their reckless behavior but they refused. At least one of the perpetrators was 15 and another was old enough to drive. All of the juveniles who were involved with committing this crime should be tried as adults and required to pay restitution for the rescue of 147 hikers trapped up the trail, the cost of battling the blaze that is still raging, and the billions of tourism dollars that will be lost by the states of Oregon and Washington, to where the fire has now spread. The charges should extend to those involved with leaving the crime scene without properly notifying authorities, including the getaway driver.
