Save the Marx Center from Demolition

Hood College plans on tearing down the Honors Program's only residence hall, office, and meeting space. There are currently 3 single rooms and 3 double rooms available to Honors students who want to live independently, yet close to classes.

As a replacement for housing, Hood offers a duplex containing 1 single, 1 double, and one triple room. If the language houses have difficulties filling up, then we will get 2 singles, 2 doubles, and 2 triples. For many, the thought of sharing a room with two other people is a deterrent. To others, the thought of sharing a fairly small townhouse with 5 other people is a deterrent as well.

We have not been given information on possible relocation of an Honors meeting space and office.

Currently, the Honors Program offers a $1000 scholarship per semester, which covers the cost of half a credit (an Honors class is 3 credits). There is a yearly New York trip, and occasional small trips offered. For some students, the Marx housing has been the only draw and reason to stay in the program.

There are currently other buildings that could possibly be used as a place for new apartments. We have also not been told what kind of apartments they are going to build in Marx's place. Will they be double rooms? Single rooms? How many kitchens will there be? Will the building be a green building?

If you think this would harm the program in terms of new enrollment or keeping students in, please sign this petition.
