WHEREAS waste landfills have the potential to contaminate surface and ground water, especially over porous aquifers;
AND WHEREAS existing provincial regulations for aquifer and drinking water protection in relation to waste landfills are inadequate to protect community water supplies:
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Province legislate enforceable and mandatory landfill siting restrictions in the Environmental Management Act, such that no permit,
approval, plan, certificate or any other authorization under the Environmental Management Act shall permit a new landfill or expansion of an existing landfill over a porous aquifer.
The Minister of environment and climate change strategy needs to legislate enforceable and mandatory landfill siting restrictions in the Environmental Management Act.
