Western Australia MUST keep its borders locked down for the near future in order to ensure the physical and mental health of its residents.

The COVID-19 pandemic is currently effecting the health and livelihoods of people around the globe. As of writing this Australia has a total of 100 deaths and 6445 confirmed cases, 534 of which are still active.

Western Australia has seen great success with its border closure, social distancing and internal lock down measures. Currently Western Australia has 3 active cases of COVID-19 as of the 20th of May 2020. With eradication of the virus in sight, the West Australia government will be able to continue to ease lock down restrictions in the coming weeks, and with that life of local Western Australians can resume to some semblance of normality.

This week several officials, both at state government level and federal government level issued claims that the states and territories should reopen their borders to interstate travel, including Western Australia.

The pandemic has still not been brought under control to the same level in other states, with Victoria and New South Wales having 97 and 403 current active cases respectively (

Mark McGowan the state Premier for Western Australia has stated that he intends to keep the Western Australian borders closed in the immediate future in order to protect the West Australian people and increase our ability to control and ease lock down measures.

This is a sensible approach until such time that the other states achieve a similar outcome and in the best interest of the West Australian people so that our efforts over the past few months are not undermined by unessential travel.

This petition is to show our support, that we stand by Mark McGowan’s border closure and serves as a message to both interstate and federal government officials that we, the West Australian people support this decision until such a time that interstate visitors do not jeopardise our ability to remove lock downs within our state.
