By signing this petition, we are calling on the Australian Parliament to prevent further deaths in the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the Andaman Sea.
Hon. Julie Bishop and Hon. Tanya Plibersek: Please utilise Australia's foreign policy and influence to coordinate a humanitarian response to the crisis unfolding before our eyes in the Andaman Sea!
We understand that both Liberal and Labor governments support policies that end deaths at sea. We also know that by pushing these boats back, up to 8,000 men, women and children will die in the coming days. This is a humanitarian crisis that needs urgent action.
Australians are watching people die and we urge you to lead the region in rescuing thousands of lives at sea by offering support to Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand to allow boats to land and coordinate long-term options thereafter.
This is an opportunity to bring all nations together, and build a long-term sustainable response to the deaths at sea, and the ongoing persecution and exploitation of asylum seekers in the Asia-Pacific region.
We understand this is not an isolated issue. On the 1st May, Australians found out that Thai authorities began to discover mass graves containing the bodies of trafficked victims, many believed to be Rohingya “boat people”. We can no longer turn a blind eye.
Australia is home to many Rohingya refugees, who have undergone rigorous processes to be determined in need of protection on the basis of persecution in Myanmar. Please lead regional coordination efforts to save lives, and engage in sustainable protection strategies that examine the root causes of this humanitarian crisis.
This situation has reached a critical point and the world is watching - Australia must act now by being leaders in our region! We urge Hon. Julie Bishop and Hon. Tanya Plibersek to prevent unnecessary deaths of Rohingyan people at sea and support a coordinated approach to the refugee crisis in our region.
