In April 1941 a group of pro Nazi generals in the Iraqi government overthrew the pro-British government in Baghdad and installed a government that collaborated with the Nazis with the aim of handing Iraq's vast oil resources over to the Third Reich. At the beginning of the following month Iraqi troops besieged the British air base at Habbaniya, but their efforts were repelled by the flying squadron based at the base and by troops. Writing about this incident in his memoirs of the Second World War (The Grand Alliance; The Revolt in Iraq) Winston Churchill wrote that had the revolt succeeded Hitler would have taken a great prize at very little cost. A memorial to those who prevented this from happening is long overdue.
