The Wynn Family will be presenting to a committee to name a facility on the ETHS Campus after Michael Wynn. Through this petition, we hope to show the committee that his legacy is already deeply appreciated amongst Wildkits of the past, present, and, future. A legacy so strong that the decision to name a facility in his honor will be unanimous and beloved throughout all generations of the Evanston community.

Michael Wynn was a proud, born, and bred Evanstonian who attended Evanston Township High School from 1961 to 1965.  He lettered in three sports, including football, basketball, and track.  Aside from his excellence in sports, he was an exemplary student leader and earned one of the school’s top awards for citizenship.

After high school, he played football for the University of Nebraska. He went on to play professionally with the NFL, after which he coached football at multiple universities throughout the Big Ten and Big Eight.  Even though he lived in several states and cities throughout his early career, he always knew that he would return to Evanston, his home, and give back to the community that shaped him.

Our father was proud and honored to return to continue his career at his Alma Mater, where he was a dedicated member of the ETHS educational staff. He held many roles, including football coach, wrestling coach, driver’s education instructor, Dean of Students, and Dean of Night School. He was a committed member of the ETHS staff during his first stint in the 1970s and again from 1985 through his retirement in 2003.

As an educator, he worked extremely hard to make a difference in the lives of his students. Former students have shared that although he sometimes had to “dish out” tough love, they now appreciate his guidance and concern. Since his passing in 2014, there have been so many times that former students have shared how much  “Dean Wynn” helped and inspired them in high school and beyond.

Nowhere is his legacy more profound than through his founding of the Justin Wynn Leadership Academy, where he has played a close hand in the development of Evanston Youth since 1987.
