Forty years ago on July 24 1973, 12 year old Santos Rodriguez was shot in the head at point blank range by a Dallas Police officer. Santos was sitting handcuffed in a police car when he was killed. Police had picked up Santos and his 13 year old brother David as suspects in a convenience store robbery that had occurred earlier that day. The brothers were later found to be innocent.
Forty years later the mother, Bessie Rodriguez, is still waiting for a formal apology from Dallas officials. There are wounds that are open and will not heal unless the Mayor of Dallas and Police Chief take responsibility for the barbaric act of their predecessors and apologize to the Rodriguez family. It is the right thing to do.
