Don't Price Kama'aina Out of Hawaii

Oahu's Real Property Valuations will continue to escalate. This is particularly oppressive for kama'aina property owners on fixed or low income who are not real estate investors.
We request the City Council of the City & County of Honolulu to provide leadership and public participation for decision-making on this issue. We suggest the following to start the dialogue:
1. Provide a freeze on property taxes for owner-occupants who have lived in their property for 15 years or more.
2. "Residential A" properties that are rented out to long-term tenants should be included in the property taxes dialogue. The recent doubling of property taxes on "Residential A" has affected tenants adversely, through rent increases.
Inaction and lack of leadership will hasten gentrification and eventually price locals out of Oahu.
