There is a term used when speaking of children and their development called the ‘whole child’. This refers to the different areas of a child’s development: physical, cognitive, communication, emotional, and social. When we think of how technology can impact those unique areas, through research we can see how beneficial it is to have children exposed to technology and technological concepts in the early learning environment. Cognitively, children are exposed to early learning concepts and languages when using a computer or tablet. Seeing what they dream of coming to life on a screen enhances creative thinking and problem-solving skills. Socially, we can see the overwhelming evidence that technology holds on a child’s development recently when all children were placed in an online learning format in March of this year. Without technology, children would not have been able to connect with family and peers. Even prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, according to Unicef, children were using technology to enhance existing relationships and build future positive relationships. Lastly, a child’s physical development is complemented through technology. Young children develop fine motor skills through manipulation of materials. Through technology, children are developing hand eye coordination and grasps such as the palmar and pincer.
Early learning education centres and educators can benefit greatly by providing additional teaching materials and resources. Have you ever had a moment when a child asks you a question that you have no answer for? What better tool to have access to for an immediate response, than the internet? As part of a child’s cognitive development, exploring the world around them is greatly important. Having the answers to questions at our fingertips is a great advantage. In addition, providing additional technology within each early learning environment provides educators a tool in which to further document observation and communicate with families.

We need the Ministry of Education to allocate funds that provide additional, quality technology to be used within Early Learning Environment.
