Steep, abrupt and late hike in DASA Cutoff for SAT2 & Tution Fees for NRI Students in NITs

Dear Hon. Prime Minister, Hon. Minister for HRD, Hon. Minister for Foreign Affairs, Director - VNIT Nagpur,

On behalf of all NRIs with their children appearing in 12th board exams, i would like to attract your kind attention towards recent changes in DASA (Direct Admission for Students Abroad) criteria for NRI students to get admission in NITs and premier Engineering colleges in India after 12th.

VNIT Nagpur is facilitating admission procedure for current academic year 2017.
Surprisingly, the admission criteria were changed recently on 10th March'17, i.e. Minimum SAT-2 cutoff marks were increased from 1440 to 1800 as well as the course fees were drastically increased for Children of Indians Working in Gulf (CIWG) category from USD 1400 per annum to USD 8000 per annum.

In my opinion it is too late a decision for students as they were already appearing for 12th STD exam when this notification came out. Due to this, majority of the students will be affected as now there is no time left to apply for other colleges as their deadlines have already passed. If this new cut off was announced in advance students would have prepared accordingly and made other applications ( those whose scores are between 1440 and 1800 - they were initially eligible for admissions but now suddenly they are not). These students now have no opportunity left to apply for other engineering colleges at this late hour. Also a steep hike in Fees will make good education out of reach for many deserving students given the majority of Indians in Gulf do not earn very high salaries. Bringing such drastic changes so late and also at the time when young students are already stressed due to ongoing board exams is quite cruel in my opinion. Due to this decision thousands of students across the globe and their families will be adversely affected and it will adversely impact their careers and lives.

Therefore, all of us, the parents of NRI children request the Hon. Prime Minister, Ministry of HRD and Ministry of Foreign Affairs to take a note of this and suspend the decision for now. A decision with such wide repercussions should be taken after due diligence and with sufficient notice to all stake holders.

Thanking you and looking towards your assistance in saving our children's careers.
