Help us change the NZ Parental Leave Policy.

We are a group of four year 13 students from Lincoln High School, we are taking a 301 senior social studies course this year and one of our assessments is to do a social action in regards to a policy change we would like to see made.

The Policy that we are focusing on is the paid parental leave policy as we feel that the current policy that only gives 18 weeks paid leave is not long enough for new parents to bond with their child. It has been proven that  the first six months are an important time for the child to bond with their parents and if this doesn't happen then it can have negative consequences for the child later in life.

We feel that it is really important that parents, especially single parents who might not be able to afford to take extra unpaid leave get this chance to spend the time needed to bond with their new child. The first step of our action is to raise awareness and money for several local Christchurch charities. Then we will write a letter explaining the issue and what we have done to support families who struggle because of the lack of support for new families spending time together while still being able to afford the cost of living from the New Zealand government.

We will then send this letter to the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment and the Minister for Workplace Relations and Safety Hon Michael Woodhouse along with this petition to request that they change the policy on parental leave, to now give a parent six months paid parental leave . We would appreciate your support in trying to change this policy, if you feel that the NZ policy needs to change too then please sign and share our petition.
