PROTECT THE PROTECTORS 40km/h speed zones when passing emergency services workers

Every day 100’s of ordinary hero’s set about serving and protecting the communities and residents of NSW. Everyday these men and women face hazardous and life threating incidents while performing their duties, however there is a silent killer waiting to strike.
This silent killer has been recognised by other State Governments and it is now time for the NSW Government to catch up and introduce a 40km/h speed zone for our emergency service workers.
We have seen in recent weeks how the lives of two NSW Police Officers changed in a matter of minutes when they were tragically struck by a motorist while setting up a roadside RBT station in South West Sydney. This is not an isolated incident, many emergency service workers have faced similar incidents while attending MVA’s, bushfires and other incidents on the state’s vast road network, RFS members working at a MVA on the Hume highway in the States south were performing CPR on a lady on the shoulder of the highway while cars and trucks were passing them at speeds of 110km/h.
We already have laws in place for other vulnerable members of the community and workers who work on our roads with speed zones around schools, roadworks and other special events, it is now time for the same protection to be offered to our emergency service workers.
We call on the Berejiklian Government to act as a matter of urgency to introduce an enforceable 40km/h speed zone for motorist when passing an emergency service operation that is identified with flashing red and blue lights.
