Refurbish the Upfield bike path to save cyclists' lives
Diese Petition hat 299 Unterschriften erreicht
This week another cyclist was killed on Sydney Road after being car-doored by a driver who did not check for bikes, and subsequently hit by an oncoming truck. Hundreds of cyclists are injured every year on Sydney Road.
A petition has been started to remove parking from Sydney road between Weston and Barkly Streets. But this stretch of road is 100m only. This will do nothing to improve the safety of cyclists for the other few thousand metres of Sydney Road.
A much more urgent investment would be a complete refurbishment of the Upfield bike path which runs parallel to Sydney Road. Many cyclists only use Sydney Road because the bike path is too narrow, too congested, unpredictable when it comes to crossroads, and at night can be dark and frightening.
We, the undersigned call on the Victorian Government and Moreland City Council to invest in a complete refurbishment of the Upfield bike path. At a bare minimum, this should include:
2. re-paving and
3. the installation of adequate lighting
This would make the bike path a more viable alternative for cyclists and remove potential for bike/automobile collisions.
