Stop the Destruction of West End's Cultural Heartland

This petition had 1,751 supporters

The West End community calls on the State Planning Minister to temporarily halt the Absoe development on Boundary Street.

The people of West End live in a unique, eclectic and vibrant cultural suburb which attracts thousands of visitors.

We are concerned about rapid and often inappropriate high-rise corporate development which stresses residents and small businesses and is slowly eroding away the very essence of the community.

Overcrowding, traffic congestion and a lack of green space are three of the symptoms of densification.

The Absoe plot is the key development site in West End. Sensitive and appropriate development 'to scale' could be an additional drawcard to Boundary Street's unique aesthetic energy and cafe culture.

We fear that the present plans for the Absoe site, comprised of monolithic towers and an over built landscape, will have the opposite impact, turning the heart of West End into a utilitarian rabbit-warren bereft of contemporary culture and vibrancy.

We call upon the Member for South Brisbane The Hon Jackie Trad MP to "call-in" this development to deliver the requisite Masterplan.

The city and suburb deserve better planning outcomes.

The approval of plans for the Absoe development days before a Brisbane city council election without due regard being paid to residents' clearly expressed design reservations, causes serious concern.

We call on the State Government to ensure that this development is master planned with full consultation with the community before any development proceeds.
