Keep the Intermediate Care Centers open

Intermediate care is a relatively new level of service for mental health in South Australia. It provides the option for consumers who are becoming unwell to ‘step up’ from community care to acute (hospital) care, or for people who no longer need to receive hospital treatment to ‘step down’ with continuing care to manage the transition back into the community.
Operational guidelines and a collaborative therapy framework underpin the service model. A recovery approach provides the basis for the delivery of the intermediate care services. This philosophy is internationally and nationally recognised having been developed by the mental health consumer movement.
There has been some discussion within government recently that the ICCs may be closed.
Although the number of acute hospital presentations may not have reduced since the inception of ICCs, it appears that overall the length of stays in acute care have reduced. In addition, when combining acute mental health and ICC separations, in aggregate there has been an increase in overall separations but a decrease in overall occupied bed days, which is attributed to a reduction in the combined average length of stay.
ICCs cost much less than acute mental health admissions. ICCs represent good value on a cost basis.
Who knows what would have happened to consumers if there were no ICCs, but reports from consumers, carers and other stakeholders suggest that the ICCs are seen in a positive light, and have saved lives!
My brother has schizophrenia and he has avoided hospital for many years due to the ICC creation. He has spent a total of approximately 10 weeks in an ICC in the past few years, compared with several years spent previously in hospital settings. Don't close the ICCs but please do increase other supports in the community, including supported accommodation options, which at present are virtually nonexistent!
