Royal Park Protection Group started this petition to Hon Matthew Guy (Minister for Planning) and

As beloved public parkland, Royal Park must be held sacrosanct. It must not be sacrificed for private commercial interests and hastily planned, economically questionable, shortsighted, outdated, polluting road building at the expense of public transport and well thought out holistic infrastructure planning that would benefit all Victorians. It must not be disrupted and probably permanently ruined by the East West Link Stage 1 tollway cutting and the massive traffic interchanges and ventilation stacks. The recommendation of the Executive Director of the Victorian State Heritage Council that the whole of Royal Park be registered must be implemented now.

My greatgrandfather Francis Meaker and great uncle Charles Meaker, as Crown Land Bailiffs, in turn took care of Royal Park from 1870 till 1934. They were dedicated to LieutenantGovernor Charles La Trobe's 1845 vision of a great public park of a thousand hectares just 2 kilometres north of Melbourne's Central Business District to be held in trust for the benefit of all citizens in perpetuity.

They shared with some 1400 current community groups and generations of our forebears an understanding of the priceless value of maintaining a unique inner city area of natural Australian woodland and grassland as public land for the health and wellbeing of the people of Melbourne.

Royal Park is an area where Wurundjeri and other Kulin nation people camped, held corroborees and took care of the land from time immemorial. Francis Meaker offered them hospitality at home in the Walmsley House, a Heritagelisted 1850s iron cottage. The last Aboriginal people were removed to Coranderrk in 1904.

As an inner city park, the 188 hectare Royal Park is unique for its intact stands of magnificent native flora, including River Red Gums, Sugar Gums, Manna Gums, Moreton Bay Figs and hundreds of other species of wildlife. The indigenous flora and fauna have been tended for over 150 years, most recently through the Melbourne City Council's Royal Park Master Plan. Royal Park features remnant preEuropean landscapes with panoramic views of the city, a designed Australian Native Garden, the White Skink habitat and the Trin Warren Tamboore Wetlands with dozens of native bird species. It also contains many open areas for informal and passive recreation used by children and adults, formal sports grounds and facilities, the Melbourne Zoo, many other historic monuments and buildings which are part of the cultural, social and environmental heritage of all the people of Victoria.
