A National Step Beyond Silence Day for Survivors of Child Abuse

It feels scary to do this. But here it goes.

I am calling for a National Step Beyond Silence Day. A day for acknowledgement, recognition and awareness raising about the profound prevalence of child abuse nationwide. A day for the nation to acknowledge the devastating impact that silence has on children affected or at risk of child abuse and their families, and for the adult survivors who survived their experience of child abuse and are now on a healing journey, still plagued with the silence around this issue in their families and communities.

In March of this year, I launched my own project called "Step Beyond Silence", in which I am recording and transcribing the stories of adult survivors of child of physical, sexual, emotional, psychological abuse and neglect, who have been willing to come forward and share the intimate details of their experience with me for publication. They shared in the hopes that their stories will help to educate families and communities of the subtle and invisible signs of child abuse and devastating effects that that can reach into adulthood, and have a real continuing impact for the rest of their lives, without society holding the space on a national level for them being able to confront their story with compelling support, and without the fear of stigma from their loved ones and the community.

This year on August 15th, 2017, I released the first edition of "I am: Survivor- the first interviews released', the first 5 stories shared, as part of Project Step Beyond Silence and the 5 subsequent volumes to come in 'The Survivor Series.'

As a survivor with my own story, I personally understand the importance of acknowledgement, and disempowerment of stigma, and the burden of both disclosure and silence that a survivor will carry with them for a life.

As a nation, I believe it is time for Australia to stand up for survivors and our children, and create a national day each year, committed to the remembrance of those who we have lost to child abuse, the innocence that was taken, the survivors that are healing and measures we still need to take as a community to expand the conversation so that we can protect future generations of children, and support current generations of survivors, so that we can one day, we can live in a society, where this NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN.

If you stand with me, please take your step beyond silence on this issue, by signing the petition and sharing it with your friends, family and community to show your support for them and their children, friends and loved ones who have suffered, or may still be suffering.

Every step beyond silence counts.
