Genetic-Based Eating Disorders (ED) have the highest mortality rates of all mental illness.

There is however, just ONE specialist pediatric ED facility in the whole of New Zealand at the Starship Hospital, Auckland with six beds - for a population of five million. This facility is ONLY available to Auckland residents, and they are overwhelmed with numbers trying to access them..

Children are being left to become so ill their bodies are damaged - becoming severely medically compromised before emergency hospital admission is obtained, usually only to be discharged back into the community and a further emergency admission.

Early recognition is internationally identified to prevent this situation. Medical student, primary care and GP training and facilities for much earlier intervention, particularly in the South Island is essential for these life threatening illnesses.

The new Dunedin Hospital is a valuable opportunity to provide inpatient beds desperately needed for our children.
