COVID-19 Outbreaks in Canadian Federal Prisons Intensifies
Apr 17, 2020 —
Thanks to everyone who has supported this cause so far by signing and sharing this petition. It is important for us as a society to come together during these difficult and stressful times. Despite calls from lawyers, activists, and prisoner advocates Correctional Services Canada (CSC) has done little to address the COVID outbreak in federal prisons across Canada. Their main action has been to lockdown all the prisoners indefinitely, cancel all visits, programs, work, education, and services which we know is extremely detrimental to one's mental health.
As of yesterday (April 16th) according to CSC's website, 50 women prisoners at Joliette Institution in Quebec have tested positive for the virus, along with 27 prisoners at a medium security men's training prison. At Grand Valley Institution in Kitchener, Ontario 9 women have tested positive. The outbreak is the most dire at Mission medium institution in BC where 55 prisoners and 8 guards have tested positive, and we learned yesterday that 1 prisoner from this prison died due to COVID related complications. Amidst these horrible outbreaks, yesterday CSC finally released an older prisoner with serious health issues from a minimum security prison near Kingston, Ontario (see the attached article for more information on this release).
CSC needs to step-up and use these release options that are available. Perhaps, now that one prisoner with a good lawyer has been successful, more will follow. We need to continue to put pressure on the federal government to not forget about these marginalized prisoners. Please share this petition on your social networks so that we can continue fighting for social justice. Thanks again!
