Over-development is destroying Canterbury and its surrounding suburbs - please help us hold on to this one space for community use!
The land that the Canterbury Bowling Club sits on was gifted to the people of Canterbury decades ago, but since the club's closure has sat under-utilised.
Just weeks ago Sydney Creative Play, our nonprofit organisation, began using the site for its playgroups, bringing in dozens of families from around the inner west and turning the bowling greens into a mud kitchen, a field for flying kites, and an outdoor space for children to sing, play, and listen to stories - bringing together community in the way that the site has always been intended.
However, just two weeks into our new space we received word that the site is going to be acquired by the state government to be used as offices and storage for the new Sydney Metro rail line, despite the number of other unused buildings in the area, and despite the site's intended use by the community.
Furthermore, community space and services are becoming a bigger issue in this area as 35,000 new dwellings are planned across the Sydenham to Bankstown corridor, with little planning for supporting infrastructure.
Why take away yet another site that has the potential to bring community together and offers open green space?
We are calling on the state government to re-consider its usage of the space in a way that allows community groups to continue operating.
