Caitlin Wood started this petition to Homestead tenants

Dear Homestead Landholdings,

My name is Caitlin Wood and I, along with my neighbours, live at Queen Margaret Building in Kitchener, Ontario. I write this letter in a time of uncertainty, of physical distancing, a time of community cooperation and in a time of of hope.

To begin, I’d like to thank the staff at Queen Margaret for their ongoing efforts to make this a clean and safe place to live. I deeply appreciate the ongoing cleaning and the many additional measures that have been taken to ensure the safety of all tenants who call Queen Margaret their home.

Next, I am writing to inquire about a possibility of creating a small community garden. I believe their may be a few spaces on the property that this could be a possibility – and imagine that it may even be possible on the roof of the parking garage where there are already stairs for access.

Now before you stop reading, or decide that such an ask is unachievable, please recognize that I know this is no small undertaking. I understand this is a big request, but I also think this could be such a wonderful opportunity for Homestead to lead the charge in recognizing and meeting the needs of its community members. Advocates across the province have been alerting officials to the importance of community gardens. They have noted how such gardens are an essential source of fresh food for many individuals and families, including those who face food insecurity, especially in a time of increased food disruption. They have also cited the many mental health benefits of gardening which include reductions in anxiety of depression. Wouldn’t it be wonderful press for Homestead to be involved in this type of initiative?

As for cost – I think this could work a few different ways. I think it is possible that some tenants would be willing to volunteer their labour in order for this process to run smoothly. I for one would gladly offer. Additionally, as there are many different building amenities that are being paid for by tenants rent costs yet are closed for the time of physical distancing – I think you could use the money saved from the cleaning, heating of the pool, and maintenance of these spaces to provide the plots for interested tenants.

I understand that there are many additional details that would need to be worked out (i.e. who would get a plot, how would we ensure maintenance, how would we ensure proper physical distancing etc.), but before any of that can be done – it is important that there is a willingness to imagine it being a possibility. I am willing, are you?

Sincerely,

Caitlin
