My name is Johnny Chiu and I was born in Hong Kong when it was still part of Britain.

As such I have held a British National Overseas passport for as long as I can remember.

I was educated at British boarding schools in England from the age of 12, along with my brother, and went on to study at the University of Edinburgh, from where I graduated in summer, 2016.

During my formative years I grew to love this country and following my graduation I knew I wanted to make my home in Scotland.

My time here was interrupted by two major bereavements in Hong Kong. Firstly my father passed away in 2008 and I had to go home to help arrange his funeral and look after my mother, as well as do my part to help sort out a legal case that dragged on for two years.

When I was studying in Edinburgh, I had planned not to leave, but my grandfather fell ill and eventually died. I had to return to Beijing to be with him, subsequently arrange his funeral and look after my grandmother.

When I came to apply for settlement – thinking there would be no problem because of my British passport – I was told that I had exceeded the length of time I was allowed to be out of the country.

People in my position are only allowed to be out of the UK for 540 days in a 10-year period.

But the Home Office took no account of the fact that two of my absences were life-changing family bereavements and dismissed my application.

My life is in Edinburgh, my friends and colleagues whom I've treated as my family over the past years; my home is here and my pets. I work hard and I contribute to the Scottish economy in several ways.

I would love to remain here and continue as part of this lovely country, it’s culture  and its incredible people.

I have enlisted the help of my MP IanMurray, but now I am asking you to please consider signing my petition asking the Home Secretary Sajiv Javid to reconsider my case.
