Jill Tupper started this petition to Home Secretary

Trevor Donald, a Windrush generation man, has been denied British citizenship because he was away from the UK for longer than the permitted time, despite the fact that his absence was due to his having been wrongly deported by immigration officials. He was away from his family, including his children, for nine years. He has since been granted indefinite leave to remain in the UK.  This is less secure than full citizenship, to which he is entitled having arrived legally in the UK in 1967. The Home Office has told him he will now have to wait until 2023 before applying for citizenship, when he will fulfil the standard entry requirements.

The Home Secretary is quoted as saying the law is too rigid to allow her to act on his behalf, yet Schedule 1 Paragraph 2 of the British Nationality Act of 1981 explicitly gives her the power to override immigration law.

I have followed the Windrush situation with horror, learning about the mistreatment of people who were British citizens in fact, if not in writing, by virtue of their entry to the UK from the West Indies before nationality law changed in the early 1970s. Mr Donald’s situation is appalling.  As I couldn’t see that anything public was happening to help him, I decided to start up my first ever petition, to raise awareness of his situation and hopefully change it.

Let’s demonstrate to the Home Secretary just how many UK citizens want Trevor Donald admitted to our number NOW.
