Four people were acquitted of charges of criminal damage after they tore down a statue of slave trader Edward Colston in Bristol city centre. The four defendants said they had done nothing wrong as they found the statue offensive. The defence in the court case turned it into a trial of Edward Colston instead of the original criminal damage charges. The outcome of this trial condones wilful damage to public property on the grounds of personal opinion.
