Problem
Northumberland Domestic Abuse Services is an independent local charity with a huge impact across Northumberland. Without further funding NDAS will be forced to close at the end of March 2019. This would be a devastating loss to the communities living in Northumberland. NDAS is the only domestic abuse organisation in Northumberland to provide specialist support and counselling for children, and we coordinate the only direct prevention work delivered in schools and with youth groups to discuss healthy relationships and consent, and to develop tools for recognising abusive behaviours.

Solution
We have submitted a funding bid to the government for support that would allow our organisation to remain open, and to continue supporting adults and children across the county. The outcome of this application is still unknown and time is running out. Our referral lists are mounting, and waiting times increasing due to high demand.

We are appealing to the government to respond to our application, and to recognise the need for funding to be directed towards community-based charitable organisations who have specialist trained staff, an understanding of local needs and interests, and networks within their community.

Personal story
I am part of the NDAS team and I refuse to allow another vital community service to shrink until it is no longer able to support those that so desperately need support. There is an urgent need for greater engagement with rural communities, such as those living across Northumberland, and a pressing need to continue working with children and young people to break the cycle of abuse.

People affected by abuse and the agencies that support them must be strengthened, not silenced.
