Why this petition matters

Fame is difficult to manage. We have seen countless people ruined by the spotlight, destroyed by the microscope of living on a pedestal. And these are the adults, people who have a lifetime of wisdom and the preparation of growing up without the pressure of notoriety. Those who achieve fame at a young age do not have these privileges. Although there are a precious few who escape the clutches and corruption of childhood fame (Natalie Portman), most child stars are never given the chance to live a normal life and suffer for it. Drew Barrymore, Macauley Culkin, Lindsay Lohan - all examples of people who were thrust into Hollywood too early and paid the price.

And now, an entirely new generation of child stars is about to face the heat. With a resurgence in children's stories, shows like Stranger Things are creating heaps of new child stars who must now struggle to adjust to an abnormal lifestyle that has been proven unhealthy. Who knows what road show business will lead them down? History has proved it almost always isn't a good one. Drake is already being weird with Millie Bobby Brown.

Why are we doing this to our children? They have so much potential, so much spark, so much innocence - why are we ruining them with fame? It doesn't have to be this way. If Hollywood would only notice the lives they are ruining, they would replace all child actors with CGI. Yes, it would be more expensive, but I challenge show business - how much money is a potential child star's future worth?

Yesterday, I watched Shia LaBeouf's autobiography Honey Boy. In it, Shia penned his experience with gaining stardom as a 12-year-old, and how it contributed to his own backslide into drugs and depression. However, not only does the narrative decry the dangers of youth fame, but 14-year-old Noah Jupe stars as an imitation of young Shia. As I cried along to film, I didn't cry only out of sympathy for the destruction of Shia's childhood, but also out of fear for the destruction of Noah's. He was fantastic in the movie, brimming with hope and life, but I couldn't help but wonder - how long will this hope and life last, growing up steeped in the spotlight?

Hollywood doesn't need child actors. Technology has advanced to allow us to realistically portray animals, impossible fight scenes, even entirely different worlds. Why can't we use what we have to save our children?
